Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I would like to have class sets of student centered newspapers to be used on a weekly basis. My students will read them in groups and share a current event with each other that they have read about. This will help them improve in areas of reading, comprehension, cooperative learning, note taking skills, and social studies. I am a fourth grade teacher in an inner city school in the shadows of downtown Houston. We are a neighborhood school that services the largest government housing project in the city. I would like to have a subscription to Time for Kids and Weekly Reader. The students will be allowed to keep the Weekly Readers and share with their families. They will use the Time for Kids with partners and I will keep them for research and future classes. These students need to experience things happening in the world around them in a fun and colorful way. I would love for my students to be able to share these papers in order to increase their academic skills and allow them to experience things outside their day to day life.
