“What I Mean is... Maybe it's Only us...” William Golding
My students need 45 copies (class set) of Lord of the Flies, the teacher's edition, one copy of Lord of the Flies Spark Notes and 2 copies of Barrons's Literature Made Easy.
There are no typical days in my classroom. We create, we learn from our mistakes, we are a team, we celebrate, we are a family. I have a mixed day with three classes of 8th grade followed by three of 6th. My biggest challenge this year will be to get them to read and be inspired by their reading.
My students come from the economically disadvantaged - we are about 76% percent free and reduced lunch.
My students come from multiple home lives; some single parent, some blended, some foster families. Overall, I have very positive students who lack materials. They are a community, walk through our doors and you can feel it. They dream of college and have advocates who want to see them succeed.
Our school is one of the oldest in the district and is composed of several buildings. The area we serve is low economically. Our school has embraced the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (MYP) and against the odds, is the top scoring school in the district in terms of Math and Reading. Our staff cares for our students and you can see it! Staff run homework, chess, robotics, and other clubs on their own time. MYP asks that our students complete service projects and our students are active in the community.
My Project
This academic year, all my classes will be focusing on our new curriculum and state assessments. Part of the assessment includes a writing task that asks the students to write an narrative essay. Our new curriculum addresses the tasks but suggests students read a mentor text with the narrative unit. I am requesting 45 copies of Lord of the Flies so my students can have access to the mentor text of the new curriculum.
This novel has similar motifs to many popular texts of the time, The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, The Selection, Matched, etc. We can compare and contrast the text with other sources as we learn to craft powerful narratives. We will use the fictional narrative of the novel to guide us in learning how to focus on one event with vivid verbs and powerful details. With your help, we can use his novel in class for reading and comprehension activities. To help struggling readers, they can listen to the author read his novel via the audiobook.
By donating to this project, you will be making materials available to two classrooms, mine and my fellow 8th grade teacher.
My request is for the 45 novels, so students can read the novel Lord of the Flies while completing the narrative unit.
You will be impacting 80 sixth grade students in my room. Your donation will also make reading opportunities available to students and increase their ability to participate as well as engage them.
