Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year has been very different and trying for our kids. I am assisting by providing a safe place for our students if they need a little time away from their regular environment. I also talk to students that are having issues, and just need someone to listen to them or mediate between them. Our school is also open for in school instruction.

During recess and lunch, my room serves as an Alternative Recess and Time Away area.

Students in Alternative Recess come into my classroom to play games and work on their Chromebooks. I am trying to teach them how to work out issues and be independent. The students that are assigned to Alternative Recess have issues that do not allow them to interact with others students positively. When I see them smile while working or playing with others, it brings a smile to my face.

My Project

When the students come to me for Alternative Recess, I will use the resources requested to teach my students how to work with others. They will work in groups of two, and work on their social skills at the same time. Some of the resources I have requested include a bean bag toss game, and two terrarium kits. By the end of each activity, my goal is to have my students be able to work with others and begin integrating back to regular recess.

The blocks and puzzles will be used for those students that need to keep busy and not wonder off because they have an IEP stating they must be watched at all times.
