My Students

Our Forensic Science class is home to over one hundred and sixty, insatiably curious junior and senior high school students in Houston, Texas.

The students are eager to learn how to perform a forensic autopsy and apply what we have learned in class.

It is wonderful that we have the opportunity to bring forensic careers into the classroom and let the students expierence first hand the steps necessary to help solve a crime.

Our school and administration are extremely supportive of the addition of our science class. We look forward to collaborating with our cross curricular counterparts as the students take the skills they learn in our classroom, and apply them to areas of Science, Law and Debate.

My Project

With this project, the students will examine a corpse and determine cause of death. We will use the Nasco autopsy pigs to study the differences between three different causes of death. The students will successfully complete an autopsy and determine how each one was killed. They will then compare their pigs and autopsy results to their classmates and discuss the differences in cause of death.

Autopsies will be broken down into the different roles of the coroner.

Each student will portray one aspect of the coroner and in the end come to a group conscense as to the cause of death. Each class will have six to seven pigs to determine the cause of death.

This project will enhance the students understanding of anatomy and how this relates to our bodies. Close up visualization of the pig anatomy will help them understand how fragile the human body is and provide insight on the inner workings of the body when a trauma is inflicted upon it. This Nasco kit provides three separate traumas to visualize and understand its effects upon the body.
