Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The almost 1000 students at our school live in a low-income neighborhood with limited access to basic school supplies. We are a Title I school with almost all of the students qualifying for free breakfast and free lunch each day.
Although my students have limited access to resources, they are enthusiastic to come to school each day to learn many new standards.
I look forward to giving my students many of the much-needed supplies this year by asking the generous donors of Donors Choose to provide these supplies.
My Project
Nine percent of the 869 students at our school are classified as homeless and do not have access to basic feminine hygiene products.
Often times, the 5th grade girls come into my class and ask if they can "borrow" a pad since they do not have them at home to bring to school with them.
Not only would I like to have some feminine pads and wipes on hand here in the classroom for them to use, but I would like to give each 5th grade girls samples of pads, personal feminine wipes, and tampons after I teach the maturation class in the spring.
I really can't believe I am writing a Donors Choose project for pads and tampons, but it is a basic necessity that my girls are not readily supplied at home and need here at school.
Thank you for considering this project. I know it is a consumable item that will not be used more than once, but it will be (quietly) appreciated by many of the 5th grade students here at school!
