Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Mrs. Smiljanich, what do you need?" This is something that I hear from multiple students everyday. What makes my students so amazing and special to me is how much they support me as their teacher. My students and I have a unique relationship in that we have "looped" together since the 6th grade and will continue to loop until they graduate 8th grade.
While my students wish they could provide me with everything that I might possibly need in order to teach them, I know that it is lovely sentiment but my no means an expectation or reality.
As a classroom teacher working in a large public school district in a major city, finding funds to provide myself as an educator is always difficult.
My Project
Every year, teachers in my school district only get $250 reimbursed for district approved classroom supplies purchased. The supplies that I am asking for are not all district approved items for reimbursement.
As a teacher, one should not have to spend an excessive amount of their own personal money for classroom supplies and tools; additionally, students living in a low-income neighborhood should not be asked to provide student non-essential supplies like extension cords, when money is already tight.
Having access to basic teacher supplies means that students have access to things like a classroom printer with ink for printing papers.
Teaching in an old and outdated building means my classroom only has two working electrical outlets in the age of technology. These basic supplies support my teaching efforts and my students learning alike.
