My Students
Many of my students (especially girls) come from backgrounds that do not encourage them to speak up and voice their opinions. These kids often will do anything to avoid being called on to read aloud, and therefore never volunteer to read their writing and present their work to the whole class. I need to do something to increase the confidence in these children, so their ideas can be discussed and enjoyed by everyone. I believe that simple technology can help bring a voice to this group of students.
My Project
I've struggled to encourage students to "speak up" when presenting writing to the whole class. Many children want to read out loud, but there is a big difference in wanting to get up in front of your peers, and the actual experience. Add to this a soft voice, and you basically get the beginning of a fear of public speaking that can continue through adulthood. I believe that by providing good amplification of their speaking voices, I can help them overcome any lack of confidence they may have already developed by fourth grade. I say give them a microphone and they will sing!
