What Could It Have Been Like for Kids During Holocaust?
Help me give my students literature about the Holocaust including the award-winning book, "The Boy on the Wooden Box," plus, "Survivors: True Stories book"; and finally a poetry book for teacher to teach from a different approach using poetry.
I am planning a thorough unit on the Holocaust and specifically, what it would have been like to be a kid during that time. This unit will include two different texts; one, The Boy on the Wooden Box, is a Christopher Award winning novel; and the other, Survivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust, which is very unique and relatable as these stories are written by children their age. I am hopeful that my 5th grade students will make connections to their own lives and to lives of others. Also, I am confident this unit will encourage empathy as well as of a greater understanding of how discrimination has been woven into our lives for many years. These books, however, take it further when they teach about loss of family and loss of life for so many undeserving people.
Because of the combination having a small classroom budget plus the fact that I have spent a great amount of money on my own classroom materials, I have exhausted my funds and can not purchase these books.
I spoke with one of my colleagues about this situation and she encouraged to make a request on Donor's Choice.
If I am able to find a donor, I will be most grateful to have these books as they will help provide me provide all the tools needed for this unit of study on the Holocaust. My students will be thrilled! I work at a Title I school and have 51 terrific students. They are amazing because they come from so many different backgrounds and walks of life. I believe they will benefit greatly from studying the Holocaust while gaining a deep understanding of how other kids their age endured.
