This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever been introduced to something that is important and should be a cause to help promote? Then you thought to yourself that you are just one person so what difference can you make? You walked away from it, and most likely thought no more about it. Now times are a changing!
A diverse, melting pot of culture, these inner city children are eager to learn and excited to discover that they can indeed make a difference, even if they are but one person.
We have become involved in projects and found that members of the community step forward and lend a hand when they see our students working on a project! We are a combined elementary/middle school in a small neighborhood where every child walks to school. Families here value education and it shows in their children. Students arrive to school, eager to learn and happy to be a part of school. I can remember being told I did not give enough homework! This came from students, not parents! This type of attitude makes you want to come to work and find exciting lessons for the children to experience. We have been working on our local watershed and need your help.
My Project
We are asking for water quality test kits, pens and pencils to write our results into notebooks. These tests will help us gather data needed to record whether our river is doing better or if someone is continuing to pollute it. Several of our students want to collect data for science fair projects and even figure out ways to filter pollutants from our drinking water. These resources will help our students achieve those goals. Using these test kits will help our students learn vital skills that can be used in the community to gain knowledge about water sources, and develop strategies for improvement. We hope to teach students skills that can be used for either choosing carer paths, developing their own choices for community involvement and planning ways to help them prepare to be responsible citizens in tomorrow's world.
Providing science experiences that are meeting state standards, positively impacting the community, and teaching students skills that will translate into job skills are challenging.
yet this field experience will do just that for our students. We just need the materials to accomplish this goal. You can be part of this worthy experience by simply helping to fund part of the project. My students need a chance to be part of tomorrow's responsible citizens. You can do just that with this project.
