Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach at a school which does not have a science budget. Every year I scrape by through projects funded by donor's choose and various things I can find for myself and my fellow biology teachers in the building. This year I have struggled to secure any funding or projects for purchasing frogs for a dissection. I have decided it may be time to try switching to detailed frog models which can be resused year to year. They will still be able to complete the comparative animal final project without the dissections and can use the models to compare the frog's anatomy with other animal's organs.
Out of my own pocket, I purchased a set of hexbugs to demonstrate the idea of natural selection by showing the bugs competing to be the fittest.
I would like to write up a full-blown lab activity around these devices for th students to fully model evolution by adding in additional "winning" bugs each generation based on which bug was the "fittest" that round.
