My Students
Our school is close to two military bases, and many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel. The school is urban and old. All students are eligible for free breakfast and lunch.
My fourth grade students want to exercise and make healthy choices but many of them are overweight and out of shape because they have no playground equipment or role models.
My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school but it is now a school in transition. The stable neighborhood is changing, 18.4% of the families received Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Ten percent are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, as well as Natives from the Alaskan rural areas. Some students are enrolled at our school because it is a school that is close to the regional hospital where their parents are getting treatment.
My kids have no money for frills like exercise equipment and they need motivation to get moving.
My Project
My fourth graders told me they want to be like Olympic athletes. So I asked what they could do to get healthy. They told me they wanted a few books about Olympic events and some soccer balls, volleyballs, basketballs so they could practice their technique. When they learned Olympic athletes exercise to music everyday, one of my kids said that they had an Amazon Echo at home that was able to be programmed to provide custom play lists and the kids all agreed that we need one. We have limited storage in our room so we will also need an inexpensive unit to make equipment easily accessible.
My kids have seen the Olympics and they brainstormed what they could do to learn more about the Olympics and to get fit like Olympians.
Students will use the books to learn more about the Olympics, they will learn stretching exercises and Tai Chi in library and then they will use the balls during recess.
Thanks to kid-inspiration my fourth graders will be able to infuse exercise into their lives through out the day. They plan to teach their teachers and the other kids about the Olympic sports, Tai Chi and stretching. This is a win-win. My kids often cannot go outside for recess because of the cold weather in Alaska but they can stretch and exercise during inside recess instead of watching a video if they have the right support.
