This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

What can be learned from owl droppings? A whole lot! Bring out the park ranger in a group of urban middle school students by helping fund the supplies needed to conduct an owl pellet dissection. Dissecting owl pellets is a great way to make the concept of food chains come alive. Because owls eat their prey in entirety, their pellets often contain large pieces of bone, or even whole bones. These bones can be pieced together to create a skeleton, and the skeleton can be used to identify the type of animal consumed. In this way, students can begin to trace the links in a real-life food chain, a critical part of our study of ecosystems. Additionally, through the dissection of owl pellets, students practice skills necessary for other academic subjects, such as making predictions, looking for evidence, and using evidence to draw conclusions. I teach science to four sixth and seventh grade classes of 30 students each at a public school in the Bronx. Because most of the learning that takes place during this activity comes from hands-on experience with the pellets, I am hoping to have at least one owl pellet for every two students. The kit that I am requesting from Carolina Biological Laboratories has all of the supplies necessary to complete an owl pellet dissection with one class---pellets, bone identification posters, tools used to dissect the pellets, and so on. Everything in the kit can be reused for the other classes except for the pellets. Therefore, in addition to this kit, I am requesting 45 replacement pellets (15 per additional class). Please help make this hands-on, inquiry-rich, informative activity a reality in our science class!
