Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a 1st grade teacher in a Title l school, my students are from low economic homes. They come to school with struggles most typical homes do not. They are struggling for basic necessities of life that most students already have.
Despite these struggles, I strive to make my classroom warm and safe for my students.
So that they will want to come to school and want to learn. Our focus is making them leaders who are well-rounded and know their strengths.
My Project
This reading assessment kit will help give me a complete picture of each reader’s word knowledge, phonics skills, fluency, and comprehension skills. I want my students to be able to choose books that interest them and that is around their level. This will help guide me step-by-step through the assessment process, and then offer clear suggestions about how to use the data to form guided reading groups, plan and teach effective lessons, and move students into more challenging texts.
Reading is an essential component in my classroom.
I choose books with my students in mind-I look to see what they are reading and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. I want to help my students be able to choose books that interest them and that is around their level, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more. Having my students knowing what books to choose based on their word knowledge, phonics skills, fluency, and comprehension skills will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
