"I am privileged to teach kindergarten at a small charter school in a Southern California community. Our school is a safe haven for children living in a gang-ridden, violent neighborhood. All of our students qualify for free breakfast, lunch, and before- and after-school programs. Our student body is 60% African-American, and 40% Hispanic, with a large population of English language learners.

I began teaching six years ago and a lot of my supplies were hand made by me. I bought small plastic food storage containers and collected small items for each letter of the alphabet. I wrote the letter on them with a Sharpie permanent marker. These boxes have done the job (marginally) but it's time to upgrade to a version that is not so tacky and will last many years to come.

This set of containers with miniatures for each letter of the alphabet is perfect! They have one for every letter of the alphabet- something I was not able to do with my homemade ones. And there is a rack to make them easily available for students and easy to return to their rightful place. Can you picture the contrast?!

There are lots of ways to spend money and it seems that we're all on a tight budget these days. However, if you want to support public education I would be ever so grateful for you to contribute to making these basic literacy items available for my class.
