My students need materials to help them regulate their emotional control by taking breaks, earning incentives and learning calming strategies. S.M.A.R.T. exercises, brain breaks, and yoga help with these tasks.
I am a Special Education teacher that co-teaches this year in an elementary inclusion classroom. Our school is a Title I school with many disadvantaged students. About one-third of our students are from low-income households.
Our class currently has twenty-four students with eight of them having special needs.
They are an energetic group that has various learning styles and have enjoyed doing breakout rooms and theme days to enhance their learning and engagement. They are always surprised and enthused to find out what we will do next. I can't wait to unroll more surprises as the year progresses!
My Project
Having students identify and being able to appropriately handle their emotional well-being is a lifelong skill that needs to follow them into adulthood to be able to be a successful adult. Students need to be able to learn how to regulate their emotions. Using a SMART course to help students release energy and refocus is one way to help students be able to focus and gain content during school days. If students are feeling frustrated they need to be able to have a chance to take a break and have some calming activities, some movement and some just relaxing, to be able to regroup and rejoin their peers.
Having options for students to explore when dealing with emotional well-being it critical.
Everyone learns different along with the way they handle emotions, so having physical options like stepping stones, balancing and coordination activities and ways to relax and calm are so important to student choice and taking responsibility for their emotional and academic learning.
Each item will be used to help balance the emotional well-being of their emotions. The Riverstones, rings and cones, and ladder would be used to help with something called a SMART course to regulate and take breaks with students energy level. The yoga mats will be used to help calm and take calming and core strength exercises for my students. The Lego kits will be used as incentives so that students can start to self monitor and their emotions and take creative and productive breaks they earn from being able to recognize and deal with emotions appropriately
