What are the Others Doing While I Teach Small Groups?

My students need interactive center activities to help them learn and keep them occupied while my assistant and I are teaching small groups. These centers will need to be stocked with math and language arts games.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have many second language learners from high poverty households in need of the best education to make them as successful as middle class and higher economic schools. I believe in promoting their beginning interpersonal communication with simple commands like, "Let's go to math games!" or "I want to play the sounds game." Can't you see the excitement the students will exhibit to others while playing interactive math and language arts activities, enjoying learning?

As my assistant and I go to teach reading groups and individualize their learning needs , I can see my other students helping each other with technology using these math and literacy games from Lakeshore.

A digital pen held by the student to answer a simple question like looking at a picture card with a cat on it and finding the beginning sound of the word. When the student points to the "c", the pen responds, "Awesome!" or a math problem like 8-4=? and my student points to the correct answer with the pen to hear another praise from the digital voice of the pen. Future literate students in the community...This would help our students immensely. Let's get there!

My Project

If my students had these interactive learning centers, I would have an engaged group of students occupied while I pull reading and math groups to the side to focus on small group instruction. These smaller groups will allow me to diversify my teaching to the groups needs instead of teaching to the mass while missing the lower performing needs or challenging the higher performing. I could have more uninterrupted small group time and less behavioral problems bored with my other generic centers.

My new centers would include games like finding the beginning, medial, and ending sounds of a picture.

The students would also be practicing digraphs sounds. Not only language arts but mathematics would be a choice as well. Kindergarten students could become numerate in addition and subtraction. A talking pen would tell the kids if they got the answer right with comments like, "Awesome!". Positive feedback motivating the students to do more.

Skills in literacy and numeracy will help my students achieve in both reading and math. But they won't think they are being sent to challenge themselves learning. They will see it as a fun game where they get praise for knowing the write sound or number.
