This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The dancers of TCHS are a phenomenal group of 10th-12th graders who train daily to hone their skills. These learners are physically expressive, socially conscious, and creative individuals. As a community we view education and art-making as tools for empowerment, self-reflection, and social change.

As adolescent learners, I find many of my students lack knowledge about how their bodies work.

The study of anatomy and kinesiology is key to better understand how the body functions in both everyday applications and the dance class. I instruct an anatomy unit in our Dance I course which includes bone and muscle identification, action of the joints, common dance injuries, and preventative conditioning. Each time I instruct this unit, I am surprised by students' excitement when they are successfully identifying bony and muscular landmarks of their body. There is a shift in ownership when this material is applied and mastered by my students. As an educator, it is a rewarding transformation to see students begin to use this academic language when describing or cueing a movement exercise. I would like to move full STEAM ahead in adapting these units to be more inquiry-based.

My Project

This project is requesting a new set of yoga mats, yoga blocks, and foam rollers for my dance class. Next year we move into a new high school site and as I was packing up the classroom, I discovered that our yoga mats, yoga blocks and foam rollers were nibbled on by the mice in our building. Unfortunately our current building is in such a state of disrepair that we have a large rodent problem. There were bite marks in all of the materials and mouse droppings underneath the items. I feel humbled by asking our donor base to support these materials for a second time, but at this point the materials are unsafe to use or even to attempt to clean. In requesting these materials, I want to showcase to my students that they deserve a new fresh start in the high school. I want them to take pride in their learning and that starts with clean and safe materials. Here is a description of the project.

I wish to empower my students with the resources of a yoga mats, yoga blocks, foam rollers, and massage balls to create personalized conditioning plans for themselves.

During the initial stages of the unit, there will be some direct instruction using the yoga mats to learn about the bones, muscles, and common misalignments. The learning will shift to be student directed when students are creating individualized conditioning programs based on their assessment of needs for strength and/or flexibility. The requested materials will be used as one to one tools so that students can experiment with varying difficulty levels of Yoga and Pilates exercises. With your support, I look forward to the personal discoveries my students will make as they learn how to better understand and care for their bodies.
