Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are enthusiastic readers of non-fiction texts. Their eyes truly light up when they get to read maps. They can gaze upon our wall map for quite a while! Their curious minds want to know more about where we are in the world.
At our Title I school, we have a limited number of colorful atlases for student use.
In our urban metropolis, the world's cultures come to us, but students lack opportunities to travel outside our region. Maps and globes intrigue them. Their natural curiosity has sparked many questions, but we need visual representations to help answer those questions.
My Project
A set of beginner world atlases will allow my second grade students to learn more about geography. They will study maps, North America, for example, and learn to identify major geographical features. They will develop a grade-level understanding of essential map elements such as title, legend, and directional indicator. They will begin to comprehend where we are in the world.
Funding of our project will enrich our social science lessons about geography.
This atlas set will give my students hands-on experience with map features. My excited little readers will finally have a map they can hold in their own two hands.
