My students need 16 graphic novel book titles, from "Amelia Rules" to "Time to be Brave".
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Tilley's classroom raised $281
This project is fully funded
I am the librarian of an inner city, K-6 school with a high poverty rate. What makes our school so special is that we are an Expeditionary Learning (EL) school. EL was developed as a program of Outward Bound. Our school emphasizes high achievement through active learning and in-depth studies.
Our students do very well on state assessments, except in reading. While our reading scores continue to improve every year, they are still below average. As the librarian, I know what our kids love to read and I'm trying to obtain high interest books that the kids willingly pick up. Unfortunately, my budget is only $1,000 a year, so I can only buy between 50-60 new books every year.
When I purchase any graphic novel, the books fly off my shelves. I can't keep them in supply and my kids (from grades 2-6) are constantly asking, "Are there any graphic novels in yet?" It breaks my heart to continually say, "Not yet, try back later".
School Library Journal recently published an article which identified 25 outstanding new graphic novels that are guaranteed to entice children to read. From that list, I chose 16 that would be age appropriate for my kids. Your help will enable me to purchase these books, and keep my kids happy. I know they will read them, which will increase literacy skills and hopefully create lifelong readers. Thank you so much for considering this proposal.
