What a better way to embrace Science through Simulated Activities!

My students need basic laboratory materials such as stop watches and stirring rods for their Physical Science Unit, eye wash station for their safety, and Dissection materials for their Life Science Unit.

My Students

This is my 2nd year at my current school. It was established last year 2015 and yes it is a brand new school. Even though we are a new school, there are still pieces missing to fully embrace our goal of excellence among our students. It is our mission for our students to acquire 21st century skills and use technology in order to enter STEM related careers. Our students go above and beyond in our classroom daily requirements, and as an educator I believe that they can do more and excel in other fields; whether it be sciences, mathematics, engineering or robotics. Unfortunately, we lack the resources/materials for them to explore. Whether a Title 1 school or not, I believe that all students should have access to such an opportunity; after all they will be the future leaders of this nation.

My Project

This group of incoming 8th graders were my students last year in 7th grade. I have seen their interest in Science ever since I included hands on and simulated activities in class for them to better understand and appreciate the concepts we learn in class. Requesting basic lab materials such as the glass stirring rod will help them in their mixture and solubility experiment in chemistry while the timer will be used in all of their experiments for accuracy, measuring time intervals. The eye wash will be important for their safety. The most important set of materials I have requested are for Dissection.

In dissecting an animal, my students will see, touch, and explore the various organs in the body.

Seeing these organs and understanding how they work within a single animal will allow them to understand how these systems work within many other animals, including themselves.

My students can also learn about ecology and evolution through frog dissection. Certain body structures and adaptations can be seen in frogs that illustrate how they evolved over time and how they fill particular niches in the ecosystems they belong to which is also part of their Science Standard.
