This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know how many meanings the word "slops" has? What about "racket"? The English language is a language that ignores rules, makes up rules, and has words with two, three -- or more -- meanings. I want my students to be able to look up words and enjoy them!
Our students are of all ethnicity's, but more than 50% are English learners.
They are all excited to learn, but have obstacles to overcome, the first one being the language barrier. In addition, our school is in a low-income area; many parents are not available to help their children with homework or to support them at school because they are at work.
My Project
Most of our students do not have dictionaries -- especially updated dictionaries -- at home. The dictionaries I am requesting will enable our students (and their families) to complete language arts homework, do book reports, verify spelling, and more. Having a dictionary at home will enable our English learners to discover and enjoy the English language! Our students who speak only English also need this support, and will benefit as they expand their knowledge of the English language. Can you imagine learning the root of a word and then being able to define many others just because of that knowledge? How exciting it will be for them! And to have a dictionary OF THEIR OWN... well, the possibilities are limitless!
I remember growing up in a middle-class neighborhood.
I always had the resources I needed to succeed in school. My mother was available to take me to the library. There was always a dictionary within my reach. I would like to provide my students with what I can -- at least a dictionary within their reach!
