My students need these items to help them to continue their work in each subject to ensure their success in reading, learning their letters, numbers, and building their social skills.
My students are extremely sweet and special, despite their current challenges. My students were affected by Hurricane Matthew, so due to that a lot of them have lost their homes. Some are living with relatives, some in shelters, some are at hotels, and some I'm not sure where they exactly are. To make matters worst, our school flooded as well. Luckily, we are at a new location where we can resume school, but unfortunately a lot of them are not back in homes yet, nor have the necessary clothes and materials needed to resume with their daily activities.
My Project
The materials listed were just a few things that the students were use to having access to before the flood put us out of our school. The students were use to seeing upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and sitting on the carpet for story time everyday. They were also use to and enjoyed playing with the puppets during dramatic play and playing make believe.
The flood turned the children's lives completely around; not just at home, but at school also.
Losing key items of clothing, their toys, and their home in general has created an idea of uncertainty for them. When they were out of school for 3 weeks, that increased those feelings of uncertainty because the children had no sense of routine anymore. These key materials will make a difference in their school lives because these items will help them to take the first step into getting back into the flow of school. Using some items that they were use to using before the flood will help them start to develop a sense of certainty about their school life again.
