I teach at a health sciences magnet middle school, where my students are hardworking and dedicated to their education. These wonderful students commit to learning in a STEM-focused environment, and in order to do so, many of these students who attend our school do so instead of their "zoned" school. These students are not only just great with academics, but they are also very active and interested in a variety of extracurricular activities that also serve as exciting educational opportunities.
Because they are magnet students, many of them have foregone opportunities for extracurricular activities, especially athletics and team sports as magnet schools don't usually offer students the same after-school activities that their zoned schools offer.
Instead of being discouraged by this, many students have simply worked hard to bring those sports to our campus, helping to create clubs and start teams, demonstrating their leadership and their passion for learning both inside and outside of the classroom.
Our cheerleading team is new, and has only been active for three years. Our cheerleaders have led pep rallies and promoted positivity and school spirit around the campus with joy! Unfortunately, COVID-19 halted our progress in terms of acquiring uniforms and training supplies.
This year, as we return to normalcy, we want to help our cheerleaders build the skills that they need to be successful after middle school.
We know that having the mat will help them build their tumbling and stunting skills, making them stronger cheerleaders. The pom poms and bows will help our cheerleaders spread the spirit and joy of being back on campus to the whole school!
