Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are the most kind, loving, and passionate group of five and six year olds. Many of my students are English language learners and have recently come here from other countries. I also have many students that are having their first experience with school in Kindergarten as they did not attend pre-school, so they are learning what school is like and what it is all about. Most of our student population is Hispanic/Latino, and our families typically have multiple students. Since many of my students are still new to the English language, they are mostly visual learners and need more exposure to vocabulary.
I teach at a Title I school in Tampa where over 90% of students are on the free lunch program.
My students want to learn. My families want the best education for their children. I want to allow my students the same opportunities as any other kindergarten class while still accommodating their different needs and preparing them for the ever changing 21st century jobs they will have.
My Project
Providing each and every one of my students with their own mailbox is giving them a place to call their own. We currently do not have a mailbox system in our classroom so papers are constantly getting lost or misplaced. These mailboxes will give my students a safe place to keep their classwork that they put so much effort into. I will also be able to successfully communicate with my students and their parents through the use of these mailboxes. Important information will be able to make it home safely.
Students learn many life skills that they will use not just this year but many years to come in kindergarten.
With the use of these mailboxes my students will practice taking ownership of their belongings as well as staying organized these skills will allow them to focus more in the classroom.
