My Students

Empathy is such an important life skill that often goes untaught. It is my goal to make sure my students leave my classroom being able to empathize with others. "Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler

My students are amazing!

They are the most eager students any teacher would ever hope to meet. My students come from homes where English is typically the second language. They have limited life experiences and rely heavily on the school experiences in order to better understand the world around them. All of the students in my classroom receive free breakfast and lunch daily. What is amazing about them is their desire to learn and willingness to take risks in order to do so. My first grade classroom is one of many classrooms in a large, urban elementary school in New Jersey. My school is a bilingual school and offers bilingual classes in every grade level from kindergarten through fifth.

My Project

I envision using the books requested to help my students become "character healthy". As a teacher, who also works as a licensed social worker, I believe it's important to help students better understand themselves and be able to relate to others. I think that one of the greatest tools used to do this is quality picture books. By using picture books, I will be able to begin the dialog for understanding empathy. The variety of books I selected provide opportunities for discussions and learning on so many different levels. While the books would primarily be used for my character education program, I would also seek opportunities to carry the learning over into other subject areas by getting the most out of our new library.

This project would improve my classroom in amazing ways!

I envision my students developing their skills to better be able to empathize with others. I believe that the students in my classroom would develop into caring, sensitive, respectful first graders. Ultimately, providing them with skills needed for succeeding in the world.
