My Students
The school year has been off to an amazing start so far. Although my class size is small this year, the learning that occurs is quite the opposite. Each day, my students show me how much they enjoy learning, and their academic and social improvements show their efforts. Lately, their gains in reading and reading comprehension have been amazing!
We're located in Washington, DC in an area where students feel comfortable with their school community.
They also feel comfortable learning together inside of the classroom. Part of the reason for their positive outlook on learning stems from the use of a curriculum that we have been using to target phonemic awareness. We have limited access to the Heggerty Reading Intervention program and our trial run will expire soon. With my students performing on a variety of learning levels, this has been the one curriculum that can be used for everyone in the class. This is also a program that allows me to adjust lessons based on student performance in real time!
My Project
The Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Intervention program allows my students to address weaknesses in phonemic awareness. Their deficits in this area have impacted their ability to read fluently, read with expression, and comprehend what they have independently read. So much time is spent on decoding words from texts that my students have not had an opportunity to truly demonstrate what they know in terms of content that has been read.
We have seen the effects of the program during our trial opportunity, but that time is about to expire.
During this time, students have had the opportunity to focus on what isn't included in many of the current programs that we have access to within our district. By providing mini lessons on smaller word parts and sounds, my students have been able to decode successfully. This has also been most helpful for my students who are dyslexic. By also focusing on phonemic awareness, students are able to see how the mouth is positioned when providing the sounds for consonant digraphs, long/short vowels, consonant blends and more.
The digital portion of the primary curriculum allows me to access the curriculum online. In the event that we have to go back to virtual learning, I want my students to continue with the same routine that they have in class. Also featured with the digital portion are online assessments which helps me to track student progress as well as provide the same quality of lessons as if they were in person.
With all of this being so new, I thought it would be a good idea to purchase the curriculum support package which will assist me with delivering lessons, provide me with professional developments and 24 hour support for troubleshooting.
