My students need refills on all our consumable science items including electrical wires, batteries, bulbs, owl pellets, seeds, and much more. Every year we use them up and then scramble to replace them.
Do you remember finally getting to the page in the science book that had an experiment? It was always so exciting! So many students get there now only to hear the teacher say, "I am sorry we can't do that. We don't have the materials."
My students are hard-working and amazing.
They speak a variety of different languages and come from homes where there is often not enough money for food, let alone supplies. Most of my students do not have the resources to support buying extra science supplies. Our school does not have the money to buy supplies either. We work hard to make sure that our students get the same experience as those students at more affluent schools. We work hard to level the playing field for these wonderful kids. I try to build their love of science by providing fun and engaging hands-on lessons. I want my students to experience the joy of making a hypothesis and testing it out.
My Project
Hands-on science has been proven time and again to be the best way to teach science. Actually performing experiments makes the scientific concepts become real to the student. These types of activities help the students feel confident in science and foster a life-long love of the subject. Building confidence in the subject early on will encourage the students to continue to take challenging curriculum in high school.
These supplies will be used at a variety of grade levels. The seeds will allow my first grade students to experiment with a variety of growing conditions to see which allow for the best growth. The butterflies will enable my second grade students to view life cycles and metamorphosis in an up close and personal way. The electronics equipment (wire, bulbs, batteries) will help my fourth graders see electricity in action! Magnet bars will allow all my 33 kindergartners to experience magnetic force. Owl pellets allow my fourth graders to explore the food chain.
These supplies will touch nearly every student in my 400 pupil school.
All students should have the opportunity to do science, not just read about it. The doing of science makes the learning stick. Please help my students reach their full potential by helping to refill our consumable science material supply.
