This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My Students: "Be the change you want to see in the world," Mahatma Gandhi said, and my students apply this quote in my classroom and dream big every day. Positive rewards and good choices will encourage the changes both Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr dreamed of for our children.
I teach high risk and special needs children in a Baltimore City Public School.
These children prosper when using positive behavior intervention (PBIS) to help them make the best choices. I have been running a weekly "Leubecker's Cafe" where students can come to the math classroom and enjoy a healthy snack and an educational movie or math help using the new Common Core Math Curriculum and Agilemind website. I have been purchasing their snacks, movies and drinks myself but am unable to continue spending so much of my money. They pay using their PBIS tickets and can enjoy a leisurely lunch with their friends.
My Project
Since I began providing special lunchtime activities and assistance for students demonstrating responsible, respectful and ready behaviors (3-R), the students' behaviors have improved dramatically. They are kind to one another, support each other, and assist one another with their Common Core Agileminds assignments on the one classroom PC.
I would like for my students to read "The Other Wes Moore" because it shows students the cause-and effect relationship between making good decisions and being successful in life. In addition, not all students have computers or internet service at home which makes completing their homework assignments difficult. They are instructed to use the computers at the public library after school but still some children are unable to do this. Unfortunately, one PC in the special needs classroom is not enough. We need a wireless laptop so that more students can complete their math assignments in school. Finally, we need some healthy snacks to reward our students' improving behavior.
As shown in the novel "The Other Wes Moore," not only do the students need to make good decisions to succeed in life but now they also need to be fluent in the use of technology.
Having a second student computer in the special needs classroom will foster their skills and enable them to become more successful in school and in life. Sadly, students without access to computers and internet at home are at a disadvantage.
Please help in providing the solution and donate to this project.
