My Project

Words are the way we experience the world around us. In order to read, write and communicate, our formulation of words is key. Words provide the foundation that is necessary to be successful in school and in life. I have the priviledge of providing speech therapy in school environments. The items that I have requested will be used by many students across many grades and levels of functioning.

The process of creating words, by articulating sounds and by creating a string of words that have meaning are essential in our expression of who we are.

The Webber Core Curriculum Vocabulary Card Fun Sheets and the Early Go Togethers Magnetic Game Boards will help teach my students about the association among words, and will teach vocabulary that they hear from their teachers in class. Often students know nouns but they struggle to produce the action words, or verbs. The Verbs and More Card decks will provide examples that will help them say more expressive sentences. The Minimal Pairs Decks will be so very beneficial in allowing my students to hear that if you change one sound in a word, you change the meaning of the word. An example of this is showing my students a picture of a someone taking a "bite" of an apple and a picture of someone riding a "bike". This focuses on language knowledge and sound production, which is an important technique in articulation therapy. The last item I requested will be used with students I currently see who have difficulty verbally communicating and who need picture presentation to allow them to express their needs and thoughts. I travel to different settings within my school. The visual schedule materials will give them access to pictures in a clear and easily accessible manner.
