My Students
Can you imagine living in today's day and age and not having a clue about world and national events? Our students are oblivious to what is happening in the world around them and at large!
Our class is primarily English Language Learners and Special Education students with IEPs and related services.
Our school population is 100% free school lunches, which reflects the impoverished state of income of these parents. Many of our children are latch-key children who spend most of their free time watching television and playing video games.
My Project
We hope to broaden our students' horizons and motivate them to engage in reading non-fiction (especially the boys, many of whom are reluctant readers). The Scholastic News Magazines will also help prepare the students for the New York State Test.
In the past, we have found our students eager to read the Scholastic News. We have found their on-line resources most valuable in supporting our teaching. Through use of the Scholastic News magazines and related reading material, we will conduct reader's theater and role-playing to reenact historical events.
Teaching in NYC's public schools for 20 years has proven to be a challenge, but also most rewarding.
Some of my former students have gone on to the most prestigious high schools and we are proud to know that one former student with ADHD has been accepted to Yale University on a full scholarship to study medicine!
