This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a STEM teacher in the South Bronx. I truly enjoy working with our fifth graders. Our students brim with energy and curiosity. They face a myriad of challenges due to circumstances beyond their control but strive for improvement every day.

Technology will only play a bigger role in the future; all children deserve access to tech resources at the elementary school level.

Our students are very savvy at using technology for social purposes but have only scratched the surface of their potential to use technology as a vehicle to opportunity.

My students are activists at heart; some of them just don't realize it yet. They are bothered by the litter in their neighborhood and are troubled by the homeless population. They care about the environment, but don't know what to do about it. They want to make the world a better place.

My Project

"Can I get some water?" If I had a nickel for every time I heard that request. I love that students want to drink water, but if they each had a refillable bottle that would be even better!

Water is one of our basic needs; if basic needs are not met, children and adults have a harder time flourishing.

When I am thirsty, I have a hard time concentrating. Kids are no different. Plus, the more water they drink the less sugary drinks they will consume, thus the healthier they will feel. Kids tell me daily that they feel better when they drink more water; their stomachs feel better; they are more alert, and are happier overall. As spring approaches, students are going to lose more water through perspiring. They need, and want, to replace the water. If they have reusable bottles, they can drink water on the playground during recess and during lunch.

Of course it is also good for the environment. We have already saved almost 4000 water bottles since we got the filling station installed last spring! Imagine how many more we could save with more reusable water bottles.
