Einstein said "Imagination is more important than knowledge." By stimulating my students' imagination I strive to build a love of learning that will help my science students gain the knowledge they need both now and in their future.
Although our district is not rich, the hands-on learning experiences that I engage my students in strive to be as rich as possible.
Our school receives 100% funding for free breakfast and lunch for all students. My 6th grade science students and science club work best when they interact with what they're learning. Many of my students have not been outside their own community, making it hard to visualize science concepts or understand vocabulary that they have never seen or heard. The only way to support students with limited life experiences is to provide opportunities for them to see, touch, interact with, and talk about the concepts they are expected to learn. Through my science classes and science club, students are given opportunities to feel like everyday is a field trip where they are transported to new interactions within the science world and most importantly where they are the center of this learning.
My Project
Chromebooks don't just help my science students learn, they engage my students so they want to learn! Let me walk you through a class day: struggling students start class with the benefits of a personal tutor by practicing teacher made online flashcards and practice tests to build confidence and vocabulary skills. Bell work starts other students on our class webpage of teacher resources such as our interactive science book, online review games, simulations of science experiments, and video clips. Students that were absent are able to make up quizzes online with automatic feedback and even have the text read to them when they need help. Other students that missed a class experiment are able to catch up by watching our class video online. A few students are asked to Google how our current topic applies to everyday life and careers. Class projects incorporate media art as students learn to present their ideas through presentations, interactive e-books, and even digital comics.
Our classroom is so close to every child having a Chromebook to work on- Please help us get #20.
My students have a variety of needs and interests. Technology not only helps me meet those on a daily basis, but also encourages independence, study skills, and creativity. Students have started creating their own review games and presentations as extra credit using a variety of online resources, because of the experiences they have in class. I appreciate all of the donors that have helped fund the 19 Chromebooks we currently use to make this learning possible. Please help us get one more Chromebook closer towards our 1-1 goal!
