Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a Title I campus located in Pasadena, which is an overall Title I district. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to go to Pre-K. As our campus does not have a program and they would have to attend another school. These programs at other campuses fill up very quickly.

Last year our learners were impacted by Hurricane Harvey, and our resilient students overcame those challenges.

We are hopeful that our kiddos will not have to have the same kindergarten experience that our students last year did. However, if we do, we know they are capable of, and will, bounce back and will still have a safe place to come to at school.

Overall, we are an amazing classroom family, and use our growth mindset to strive to be the best we can be.

My Project

In Texas, you never know when you're going to need your winter clothes. Our weather flip flops from one hour to the next, so being prepared is essential. While Texas can be pretty hot, we also experience some chilly days (sometimes an ice day!), and my students do not always have mittens to keep their tiny fingers toasty. These mittens would allow each student in my classroom to have their own pair to keep.

Being able to provide winter mittens to all of my students would help aid in making sure their little hands and fingers can stay warm on those chilly days, and come in ready to learn.

Not only would these mittens help keep the hands of my little learners ready to work and learn both in and out of school, it would also become a great literacy activity. Each year we read “The Mitten Tree,” in which an older lady knits mittens for the children she sees at the bus stop each snowy day. She clips mittens to the tree near the stop, and children are able to get mittens for their hands. Being able to have mittens on a tree in our classroom would provide this connection to our text. What a wonderful literacy connection and experience to do on December 6, the official Mitten Tree Day - each child provided the opportunity to “pick” mittens from the tree.
