Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We are slowly building up a theater program at a high needs middle school in the Bronx and the students are incredibly eager to tackle the area of costume design and construction. While I have the experience to guide them through this new process, I don't have the equipment required to begin. Our school is situated in a very needy section of the Bronx and almost all of our students qualify for the free lunch program. Our population is primarily Hispanic and African American and over 87% of our kids speak English as a second language. I currently teach English and Theatre and I find that our funding for the arts is continually in jeopardy. In addition to establishing a creative outlet for the 50 6th through 8th grade students in my theatre program, my kids will also be gaining the valuable and translatable skills of sewing and needlework. Naturally, we will need some basic supplies to begin, including sewing machines, shears, fabric and notions like buttons and velcro. Many of my kids are struggling with perfecting their English and are often too self-conscious to dive into the acting component of the program. By introducing them to the design and technical elements of theater, they will have the chance to showcase some of their ideas and talents in new and exciting ways.
