Every morning we do Guided Reading where students are getting the time to practice reading books that are just right for them. It is hard for them to find books they actually enjoy reading when the selection in our classroom is so low.
The students in my classroom are very hard workers, but many come from low income families and don't have much to call their own.
It is hard for them to focus on school work when they have so many issues they are dealing with at home as well. Our school tries to focus heavily on reading, however many still struggle because they don't get enough time to practice reading real literature.
My Project
In our classroom, we do Guided Reading, where students are put into groups with others of a similar reading ability. As a teacher, it is hard to find time to meet with each group every day, and many get bored reading the same books over and over. Having a larger selection of leveled books would not only give the students more opportunity to practice reading authentic texts at their level but would also get them more excited about reading.
If this project was funded, I would have more of a selection in my classroom library where students would be able to spend time reading books that are at their level to practice and get more exposure to reading real texts.
It would improve their love of reading and facilitate them to become lifelong learners.
