This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Fifth graders love a challenge! I teach a fifth grade class in a socioeconomically challenged area of New Jersey. Our school has a very diverse population of students, with almost 85% of them receiving federally subsidized free lunch.
My students are avid readers and each year look forward to competing in the Battle of the Books competition. Throughout the school year students read each of the books on the list in preparation for the "book battles". After reading the books the teams are set, and the students are ready for action! Questions about characters, setting, plot, and details about the novels are posed to the teams. After several elimination rounds the battle comes down to two teams and an overall winner is crowned!
Educationally sound, friendly competition among classmates - what a way to motivate kids to read!
Traditionally, our school media specialist has compiled and ordered the novels for this exciting literature competition; unfortunately due to budgetary constraints our media specialist has been cut to a part-time position and the budget to purchase the books has been eliminated.
Not wanting to disappoint the students, I'm turning to you and Donorschoose.org for help. Participation in the Battle of the Books requires multiple copies of a variety of novels. Each of the novels selected provides students with the opportunity to read quality writing from many well-known authors. The novels appeal to many different interests, boys and girls alike.
Your generous donation will allow my fifth grade students to continue on their literary journeys, as well as participate in a fun, competitive and educational competition.
Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal.
