My Students
Did you ever share a book you loved with a friend? Do you remember telling each other the good parts and then trading the books? My students never have that chance because they are are struggling readers who cannot find anything on their level.
I have been teaching for less than 5 years and I need more materials for my students.
My 19 second graders are great students but they suffer from a serious handicap of a limited classroom library. Nine of my students are at the pre-primer level. They often cannot remember the names of the letters. Seven students are over a 1.5 years below level. I have six English Language Learner students. Eleven of my students qualify for free and reduced price breakfast and lunch. My struggling readers are often the target of playground bullies who make fun of their poor academic success.
My Project
I firmly believe that children learning to read need ready access to interesting books. I need paperback trade books on different levels for my struggling readers. A good classroom library would promote greater amounts of reading, would increase reading frequency, and provide more diverse reading experiences for my students. As part of this project, I plan to develop reading book bags that my second grade students can take home to read as part of their homework. These new books would help my struggling readers attain greater fluency and higher levels of reading achievement. I also plan to use the lessons in Bullying in Schools to help my students learn how to deal with bullies in the classroom and on the playground.
We all know that studies now show that if a student cannot or does not read by grade 3, they will probably never learn to read proficiently.
Nonreaders are more prone to drop out of school before 9th grade. My students deserve a chance. With the help of donors we can break the twin cycles of bullying and illiteracy for these children. Please support this project.
