My Project

Our school was fortunate to pilot our district's new literacy curriculum two years before the rest of the district and it has helped us grow as writers, researchers, and readers. Additionally, the curriculum (EL education) allows students to use their research as a tool to better their school and community. Armed with their newfound knowledge and desire to "do better", our classroom is looking to diversify our library so it reflects ALL of the cultures represented in our school and community.

Our classroom family is comprised of scholars from multiple races, who speak multiple languages, have varying interests, and many unique abilities.

This is why it is so important for them to see themselves represented in the texts they read. For that reason, all of the texts chosen as part of this project were selected by the students themselves and will be added to our growing classroom library for this year's learners, and many more to come! I am lucky to have a group of 30 avid readers this year; kids who can't get enough to read, it seems, and even request classroom celebrations centered around reading! I need more books to feed their need to read!

As an avid reader myself, I am always trying to find ways to hook my students, especially the most reluctant readers, with even one book that they WANT to read. It was an honor to work with my students in creating this project for them because I was able to see their excitement build with the possibility of new books heading their way soon!
