My Students

My students represent a diverse population and are a reflection of the people that live in the world. At my school, students are dealing with things that are stressful, cause them to lose faith in the system, require them to go without, and make miss out on being a child. With all of that, my students are determined to finish school, overcome the obstacles of life, resilient, talented, and funny!

As the math teacher and basketball coach, I get to interact with a majority of the students and get to see and hear how life can impact their ability to get to school.

The students at my school are underestimated and we work to help them prove that assumption wrong.

My Project

A big thing in our building is ownership and having access to supplies that we need when we need them. Since we are an alternative school, our sports program gets very little funding. This means that we have to sometimes wait to get access to the gym, basketballs, and locker rooms. One thing that would help is to have basketballs and pump so that we can start practice on time and that the students know they have their own supplies. Our athletic program is one of the key factors in how some of our students stay engaged and come to school. Their love of sports and desire to play helps them build confidence, creates community, and supports their academic progress towards graduation.
