I am a 1st grade teacher in a low income/high poverty school district. My students overcome challenges on a daily basis in and outside of the classroom. They work hard each day and do their best to succeed. My classroom is filled with positivity, creativity and laughter.
My students teach me how to over come adversity and hardship each day.
They are learning the skills they will need to help them succeed in their educational journey. Together as a classroom family we teach each other how to be kind, thoughtful, determined and hardworking individuals.
My Project
The items on my list are not for a specific project they would be used everyday in my classroom. These items will help our classroom become a safe and secure space for my students to learn. For many of my students school is the only secure and constant thing they have in their lives. A color coded rug will create boundaries and help students feel secure in their own space. Headphones will reduce the noise when students use technology. With the reduction of noise small group time will be more productive. The books in my classroom were bought second hand from yard sales. The books are a mixture of levels that are above many of my students' comprehension skills and reading levels. New books would give my students the opportunity to read independently. Seat sacks will help my students learn personal organization skills. This will give them personal responsibility.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
