We're Not Preparing for Summer, We're Preparing for Some-More Success!
My students need these items to continue to be successful throughout the school year. Calculators, pencils, backpacks, and tissues are non-negotiable items we need for success!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm still waiting to find the words to describe the feeling I get walking into my classroom every day, in short, I am the luckiest woman in the world. I have 50 little people that I look forward to seeing each morning. Each and every student of mine individually and collectively means so much to me.
My students embody an authentic happiness that they bring to school every day, and as their teacher, coach, biggest cheerleader, and admirer I try to match that authenticity.
My goal is to incorporate happy, realistic connections and experiences between their academic goals and school curriculum with their real lives.
My Project
Getting school supplies can be a difficult task from the beginning, but maintaining school supplies is the ultimate wish for any teacher to have in their classroom. Daily, students lack pencils, calculators, notebooks, hygiene supplies, such as tissues/hand sanitizers and even book bags. Figuring out where students are going to get these supplies creates a ripple effect of inconsistencies in their academic performance. Whether it's constantly having to ask a neighbor to borrow a pencil, paper, or interrupting the lesson to ask for other supplies, it can be quite frustrating for the student. Additionally, because I am teaching in an inclusion setting, certain math manipulatives and/or accommodations must be provided. Being able to supply my entire class with calculators will further prepare them for successful ventures in school. The iPhone case is for my treasure box: Each week my students take a multiplication quiz and after they get 40 or more three weeks in a row, they move to the next level and they can get a cool prize out of the box each time they move up.
Because I consider myself more than "just a teacher", I think it's important to understand that students are not always responsible for things they do not have.
This includes items necessary for maintaining proper hygiene. I keep "at home" necessities in my classroom for children who may not have access to them elsewhere. Items such as deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, socks, and hair brushes are also items that provide students with confidence, a sense of pride, and one less reason for other students to possibly tease, or taunt them. Unfortunately, I do not have a discrete place in my room to house these things. A filing cabinet would be a great addition so that I may place and lock these items away.
The demographics in which I teach calls for huge understanding and empathy in some cases, as parents cannot always afford to buy and maintain the many requirements and necessities that are associated with education.
