This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are mostly from lower income households, where their families are either struggling to get by or experiencing the hardships of mothers, fathers, and even siblings living apart from one another, many times in another country. They end up in our schools with a variety of needs, often times not speaking the language, having any family near, or sometimes sharing living quarters with relative strangers.

Our students are immigrants and minorities, many who come with very little by way of money or experience and need something to keep them motivated and excited to keep coming to school everyday.

We love them all the same, and so we decided to create a baseball team that will allow them to develop bonds with others who have similar interest, on a baseball diamond where the grass is always green and it isn't over until the fat lady sings.

My Project

My students need baseball gear for the upcoming season, funding is always hard to come by and our students often times struggle with providing the resources for the necessary for tools for success on the baseball diamond.

When I was hired as social studies teacher in the fall of 2014, we didn't have a baseball team.

I didn't really understand why, since all you would hear and see in the halls are students all decked out in the favorite team's fitted caps and jerseys talking about how the Yankees are the best or how the Mets "run" New York now, by students. Perhaps it was because we're a small school that shares our building with two other excellent schools that a baseball team never got off the ground.

Nevertheless, it dawned on me that this was my chance to do something I both love and could share with our students after school in safe and caring environment.

We founded the team that very year in 2014, after some long meetings between the schools regarding funding and school expectations. Last year we played our first full season and we did really well, going 8-0 and eventually being promoted in just one season to Division "A" ball. Last year we went 12-2 and my boys had the time of lives and we seek to do it again this year.

Our mission in establishing this page is to get our boys the gear they need to be successful on the field, and for that we need your help. Please donate to our cause, I will regularly post updates regarding games and pictures of our students in action. Thanks for the love.
