Students who otherwise wouldn't have been able to read at home, some of whom have never read a novel cover to cover, were motivated and engaged throughout these units. \r\n\r\nOur 9th graders used their copies of Steinbeck's \"Of Mice and Men\" to conduct two murder trials: one for George (who the prosecution charged with 1st degree), and one for Lennie (charged with 2nd degree). Team captains even elected to meet outside of school hours to pore over the books and solidify their evidence to prove criminal intent. \r\n\r\nOur 10th grade students were touchingly thrilled to have real copies of Fahrenheit 451; they were sick of reading off of computers all day. One student gave feedback that \"at first I thought the book was boring, but then when I signed it out to take home I locked in. I've never read a whole book like that before\". Aside from engaging in lively Socratic Seminars, many students chose to focus on Fahrenheit characters for a project in art class. The project required them to depict a character that they felt passionately about. \r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity.
