We're Lopsided! We Only Have Half of a Light Show!

My students need another 4 bar, remote controlled lighting package and two extra remote control units so both sides our stage can rock out with an amazing show.

My Students

My classroom is performance oriented with a stage, a full set of risers, and more instruments than you would expect in the average elementary classroom. We make music with our own hands and breath, and we do it well. I'm in my fifth year at this school, and in the time I've been here, my students have become multi-instrumentalists on the bass, mandolin, piano, and drums. Some students like to switch around between the instruments, while others have "specialized" and concentrate all their learning on just one. Either way is fine by me, as long as they're learning and enjoying music and school.

My Project

Recently our classroom had a project funded for a really cool remote controlled light show. Kids get to decide what color to use and when to change the colors. The love this thing so much! The older kids especially have been asking if we can get another for the other side of the stage. I thought this was a great idea as I think lights are awesome cool and I'm also a big fan of symmetry.

This extra light show stand will allow more kids to act as our lighting designer and will give students another option for something to participate in if they're not a fan of playing an instrument or perhaps just in the mood for something else that day.

You may, as a donor just think a light show is a light show and might be a frivolous addition. Au contraire! This device provides my students another way to listen, find the beginning of each phrase, count the 8 beats per phrase, participate in music in general, and make a performance much more interesting. So many benefits from a light show! I have students change the color of the lights at the start of each phrase when we practice songs. This helps the players know when to start a melody over again if they happen to be lost. (This happens frequently at the elementary level.) If a song gets more exciting or changes during the chorus or verse, the students can alter the timing of the light changes to match the "mood" of the music. I am finding with the one light show we already have that students listen more and are engaged more deeply than before. We are very excited about getting another light tower to make both sides of our stage match.
