This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Just as a smile, music is something that all students can appreciate and relate to.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a school that is considered high-poverty/high-need. My goal is to expose these students to many different types of learning styles throughout their first year of school. Music is a great way that many students can learn basic building blocks of education while being exposed to various learning styles.
I am seeking a way to engage and involve all students through the power and influence of music. The Dr. Jean Collection of Cd's offers this capability to students. I had the privilege of using several of these Cd's during my time student teaching. The students were able to learn about many of the necessary objectives of Kindergarten through the use of these Cd's. The students thoroughly enjoyed the Dr. Jean and Friends CD, containing such songs as “Macarena Months” and “Days of the Week”. During math assessment, I took notice of the benefits of these Cd's as I asked students to name the months of the year and the days of the week. The students recalled these, with the majority of them saying/”singing” in the tune of the Dr. Jean songs. By providing students with a way to actively engage in their own learning, it must be noted that students participate more attentively and seem to “soak” in more knowledge. In my experience, music is the perfect way to have students participate in their own learning.
The Dr. Jean Collection also consists of various Cd's to help teachers assist students in other mathematics skills, along with various reading skills. As literacy and mathematics are the core subjects taught and assessed, I am looking for materials to assist me in helping students to develop the skills to become successful, lifelong learners. The songs on the Cd's are easy to learn for students (and teachers!) and consist of educational value in these subject areas.
In Kindergarten, it is important that students learn to become comfortable with other students and learn to follow directions. I believe that these Cd's provide the opportunity for students to learn and expand in these areas as well.
In addition to the Cd's, our classroom also needs a CD player. Thank you in advance for any help that you can provide to our class! We are looking forward to an exciting and learning-filled year of school!
