Mathematical problem solving is evident every day in my classroom. Students are exposed to rigorous and challenging application problems that require grit and determination to solve. We learn math, but we learn "stick to it"-ness, too.
Students at our high school are as diverse as they come.
We have every race, culture, creed, religion, and any other group possible, represented amongst are student body. We have clubs that spotlight and celebrate these wonderful differences. Our urban high school is Title I and also a comprehensive school with all of the sports, arts, and extracurriculars that go along with this designation. We boast the highest AP scores of the comprehensive high schools in our district. Teachers and students work hard to maintain a culture of high expectations.
My Project
We have no math textbooks in our school. None for students and none for teachers. Ebooks were adopted for all in mathematics. However, internet is sometimes unreliable where students and teachers cannot access their textbooks. Teachers and students need access to at least one text book in each classroom that is physically present. One that can still be viewed when the wifi is down.
Teachers always have a back up plan in case lessons do not go smoothly. Having a hard copy of the text will provide an important back up to allow lessons to continue and planning to be done. Technology is wonderful, but not foolproof. Teachers want to provide the best quality lessons, engaging students minds every day.
Every classroom will have one textbook.
This book will allow students to view their mathematics examples, problems, and homework when internet is not available. They will still be able to apply new knowledge by practicing problems. Teachers will also be able to access their resources from anywhere and anytime. This one textbook will essentially be shared by a teacher and their 150 students. Such a small book but such a huge impact. This project will allow 3 teachers to receive one book.
