We're Growing - Butterflies and Crickets!!

My students need this opportunity to watch the metamorphosis of live caterpillars into butterflies. They will also be able to observe adult crickets lay eggs and see those eggs hatch!

My Students

I teach in a Title I school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My classroom is EC inclusive, meaning that I have Special Education students, as well as students who are learning English as a second language, and students whose abilities cover a wide range. This is a diverse group of children, all coming to school with different backgrounds, experiences, and needs.

My students love coming to school and they're excited about learning new things!

Many of the activities and materials they encounter in the classroom are new to these young children. Most of them don't have opportunities to participate in the experiences that we might assume are available to all children.

We serve a transient population, including military as well as homeless and displaced families. Our students often come to us with gaps in their education and they are so eager to learn!

My Project

My students have never had the opportunity to watch the metamorphosis of caterpillar to butterfly. These resources will allow them to not only watch, but to participate in the process by learning about insect habitats, feeding, and care. They will also observe adult crickets as they lay their eggs and then see the eggs hatch.

Not only will my young students learn about science; they will learn about treating these creatures with gentleness and kindness.

They will take responsibility for the feeding and care of the insects and will feel the amazing joy and exhilaration of releasing their charges out into the world, knowing that they had a part in helping them grow.

Nothing compares to learning through real-life, hands-on experiences. Raising these insects to adulthood will provide my students with a great learning opportunity as well as creating a respect and love for science and for our fellow inhabitants of the earth. The memories they create during this process will last them a lifetime!
