My students need a place to shop (storage cabinet and storage containers), and items to purchase such as headphones, books, pencils, crayons, and highlighters.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." The focus of this project is on equipping my students' today, with the tools they are going to need tomorrow. Instead of just giving them "fish," I am teaching them how to do so.
With a clear conscience, I can say that my students are intelligent.
My students are kind. My students are considerate. My students are helpful. My students are full of potential. Although my students are amazing, many are facing undeniable odds. Many of my students are living in poverty. Some are being raised by sick grandparents, some have parents who are incarcerated, and others have been charged with the task of looking after younger siblings and cousins. Although the odds are stacked against many of them, we do our best to convince them that they are brilliant. Success looks different for each of them, but they are all successful in one area or another.
My Project
These resources will afford my students the opportunity to practice the order in which they should do things, as financially responsible adults. With this knowledge, I believe they will be equipped with the tools necessary, to begin to break the cycle of generational poverty that many are presently living in. Before they will be allowed to shop at the classroom store, they will use a portion of their income to pay their rent. With their remaining money, they will be able to purchase one item, and be allowed to save the rest of the money for the following week. Having the large cabinet and storage containers will serve as an actual store for my students. The students will practice making financially responsible decisions as they decide between wants and needs. For example, they may want new crayons, but need a pair or headphones (as each child is required to have their own pair).
Donations to this project will improve our classroom, and will change my students' lives for the better!
In speaking with parents about what we are doing, many of them wished they had learned how to manage money before becoming adults.
