My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun.

My students are diversity personified from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

When I greet them each day, some are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging. In middle school, you never know what the day might hold. One thing is for certain: most days are extremely busy and completely unpredictable!

My Project

Distance learning is challenging for students, their families, AND teachers. I want to give my students the best possible learning environment that I can even though we will be using Zoom and Google Classroom. In my physical classroom, I always write our daily agenda and lesson objectives so students are clear about what we'll be doing and what they're expected to learn. Unfortunately, I don't have a whiteboard at home to show them our agenda and objectives when I'm Zooming from home. Last year, I found that not having a whiteboard during our Zoom sessions made the students a bit fretful about class and not knowing what was coming. I realized how often they rely on our agenda and objectives.

Using the mobile whiteboard, I will be able to create a visual daily schedule for "class"—I can write out the daily agenda so my students are clear about what we're doing and when.

I can also demonstrate complicated topics (such as how binary code works). I'm hoping to simulate as much of a real classroom experience as possible through our computer screens.

I'm also missing some basic office supplies that I need in order to organize student work. Have you ever tried to organize work without a stapler? I have tons of resources from Teachers Pay Teachers, but no way to staple them together or flag important points in the lesson with Post-Its. I'm on my last ream of paper at home, so I'll soon be unable to print work for students who don't have reliable Internet connections. Best of all, these materials can all be taken to school when the pandemic is over to support our learning environment!
