Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach Theatre Arts to sixth and eighth graders in an urban middle school in Southern California. We are a Title I school and the majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Although there can be many obstacles that poverty presents, my students inspire me everyday with their willingness to learn and try new things.
To help them succeed, I have established collaborative literacy groups in my classroom with a positive behavior support system that holds students accountable to each other.
Students work together in small groups to earn "points" for categories such as; coming to class on time, completing their work, bringing their school supplies, doing their homework, and consistently demonstrating positive and respectful behavior. Student groups are rewarded with raffle tickets for having the most points on a bi-weekly basis. When students find out that the grand prize is something truly exciting, they get excited; which in turn translates to higher motivation levels in the classroom.
In middle school, when students choose a path they will likely follow later in high school, a shot at the grand prize could make all of the difference in ensuring that they graduate. With your help we can make sure that ALL students succeed.
